With a sharp-edged exterior that is made of scratch- and dent-resistant stainless steel, Tesla's all-electric truck is seriously tough. Along with available all-wheel drive, the Cybertruck can tow up to 14, pounds and has an estimated driving range of plus miles. Of course, there's still a lot we don't know about the Cybertruck, including when it will officially go on sale. Right now, it looks as if the first versions will go into production in late Tesla is expanding its lineup to include one of the most popular body styles in America—the pickup truck.
With seriously impressive stats for both an EV and a pickup, the Cybertruck gives the company a theoretical ace in the hole given how well trucks sell in this country. Although Ford and General Motors say they'll have electrified versions of their own within the next two years, the Tesla's only other competition is the Bollinger B2 and the Rivian R1T.
The Cybertruck will be available in three different configurations, which are all based on the number of electric motors each has. While all-wheel drive is standard on all but the single-motor version, each additional motor means quicker acceleration, longer driving range, and greater towing capacity. The Cybertruck is available with not just one, not just two, but three electric motors.
While the single-motor truck has rear-wheel drive, the two- and three-motor models have all-wheel drive. Tesla claims it'll go from zero to 60 mph in 6. The dual-motor Cybertruck will reportedly reach 60 mph in just 4. Those looking for the ultimate performance will appreciate the three-motor model, which Tesla says will essentially teleport from zero to 60 mph in 2.
All Cybertrucks have an adjustable air suspension that can be raised or lowered on the fly and provides up to 16 inches of ground clearance. Add that to its degree approach and degree departure angles and the Tesla pickup could prove to be a formidable off-road machine. Likewise, we'll also have to wait until we get our hands on a real production model to test its ambitious maximum driving range in the real world. Those who thought the Tesla Model 3 interior was minimalistic will relive that reaction when they see the Cybertruck's spartan cabin.
While many standard features and options haven't been disclosed, the first images show a slab-like dashboard that is solely dominated by one large touchscreen. Its squared-off steering wheel looks to have some sort of illuminated display, but nothing has been confirmed.
The Cybertruck will also be able to seat up to six people, and its 6. It also has a nifty slide-out tailgate that doubles as a ramp to load four-wheelers and motorcycles. As with most of the interior, specific details about the Cybertruck's infotainment system are largely a mystery. However, we do know every model will have a big inch touchscreen that is horizontally mounted in the center of the dashboard.

At the time, the claim seemed a bit much. They noted their battery could be especially useful for self-driving robotaxis and long-haul electric truckstwo products Tesla is developing. Rather, they present it as a benchmark for other battery researchers.
Within the EV industry, battery chemistries are a closely guarded secret. Indeed, shortly after the paper came out, Tesla received a patent for a lithium-ion battery that is remarkably similar to the one described in the paper. Dahn, who declined to comment for this article, is listed as one of its inventors. The electrolyte, which ferries lithium ions between the electrode terminals, consists of a lithium salt blended with other compounds.
The blend of electrolyte and additives is what ends up being the subject of trade secrets. But even those materials, as described in the paper, were well known in the industry. Instead of using many smaller NMC crystals as the cathode, this battery relies on larger crystals. Cracks in the cathode material cause a decrease in the lifetime and performance of the battery. In electric cars, these metrics translate to how far you can drive your car on a single charge and how many charges you can get out of the battery before it stops working.
Customers want to be able to drive long distances on a single charge. In fact, based on the average American commute, Dahn estimates that most EV owners use only about a quarter of a charge per day. But to make a fleet of robotaxis or an empire of long-haul electric trucks, Tesla will need a battery that can handle full discharge cycles every day.
The problem is that fully discharging and recharging every day puts greater stress on the battery and degrades its components more rapidly. Long-haul electric trucks and robotaxis will be packing in way more daily miles than your average commuter, which is why Musk wants a battery that can last for 1 million miles.
Musk asked, and Dahn delivered. For the sake of comparison, a paper from showed that similar lithium-ion batteries lost half their capacity after only 1, cycles. Just days after the publication of the benchmarking paper, Tesla and Dahn were awarded a patent that described a single-crystal lithium-ion battery almost identical to the batteries described in the paper. That approach can boost the energy density of a battery.
Meng says the next step is to merge those higher-density designs with some high-performing mix of electrolytes and additives.Although Tesla is viewed as a disruptive force in the auto industry, it made a splash using a tried-and-true method for success: speed. This is a sure strategy for building hype, but it's not the only way to convince the world of your car company's legitimacy. There are other considerations for building a competitive electric car, and driving range is chief among them.
So in addition to its speed-focused, top-of-the-line version of the Model S called the PDTesla also offers a less extreme D model that's not quite so, ahem, ludicrous in its purview.
Tesla May Soon Have a Battery That Can Last a Million Miles
Without the P for Performance tacked on to its badge, the Model S D puts emphasis on going farther between recharges rather than on drag-strip launches. The in the name denotes the biggest battery pack that Tesla offers, a Without the PD's extra grunt or those electron-sapping Ludicrous or launch-control acceleration modes, the D boasts the longest EPA-estimated range of any current Tesla—and of any electric car—with its mile rating.
The PD nips at its heels with a mile range estimate. As with a gasoline car, your mileage may vary, as it did in our mph highway fuel-economy test, where the Model S couldn't quite match the government's result and got 91 MPGe. Still, our testing proved that it's possible to cruise at 75 mph for miles in the Model S.
Though that's nearly 20 percent short of the EPA's number, it's by far the best of any EV we've tested. While that's more than a second off the pace in both metrics of a now outdated Model S P90D we tested almost three years ago, the electric motors give a hearty, instantaneous response when you step on the accelerator, and the car's rapid forward progress is even more remarkable when you consider it weighs nearly pounds.
Given that avoirdupois, the D performed admirably in our handling and braking tests, achieving 0. Like many EVs, the Tesla benefits from having the significant weight of its battery pack mounted low in its chassis, and the Model S's unerring stability and agile responses are due at least in part to the car's low center of gravity. Despite the numerous battery and electric-motor upgrades Tesla has bestowed on the Model S—not to mention continuous over-the-air software updates—the car feels much the same as it did when it first arrived more than six years ago.
The exterior design is far less distinctive than it once was, owing in no small part to its relative ubiquity today. This slight staleness inside and out erodes the value equation for the Model S. But even as Audi, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz enter the EV space, none has fitted its vehicles with a battery pack quite as big as the D's, and none produces a car that achieves a rating of miles on a single charge.
For now, the Model S remains a unique proposition in offering what might be the truest luxury of all in an EV: a surplus of driving range. Buyer's Guide.
